Introduction
Auto-DM is one of the most powerful apps inside SuperProfile. It allows creators to automatically reply to Instagram engagement such as comments, DMs, story replies, and even live stream comments.
Instead of manually messaging each person, creators can set up automations that instantly deliver links, freebies, or product offers. This turns everyday engagement into growth and revenue opportunities.
Common uses include:
Sending a guide or freebie when someone comments a keyword.
Replying instantly to story reactions.
Auto-responding to DMs with preset answers.
Nurturing leads by asking for a follow or email before sending content.
With Auto-DM, creators save time, grow their followers, collect leads, and increase sales – all on autopilot.
Note: Auto-DM currently works only on Instagram. Support for other social media platforms is coming soon.
Connecting Instagram with Auto-DM
Auto-DM only works when an Instagram account is connected. To set it up:
Go to Your Apps → Auto-DM in your SuperProfile dashboard.
You'll see a video pop-up on the screen. Watch it to get a quick overview of the Auto-DM feature. To proceed further, click Connect Instagram.
To connect Instagram with SuperProfile, you'll need a Creator or Business account (personal Instagram accounts do not work with external apps).
If your account is personal, Instagram will prompt you to switch it into a professional account (Creator or Business). Please complete this step in order to connect Auto-DM.
Approve all requested permissions – including access to messages and comments.
Once connected, you will see options to set up Auto-DM on reels, posts, stories, or Instagram Lives.
You can even connect multiple Instagram accounts to Auto-DM. Go to the Settings tab → click Add Instagram account → repeat the same connection process.
While setting up an automation, choose which Instagram account you want it to run on.
SuperProfile is an official Meta Tech Provider. We use Meta's API directly without any intermediary in full compliance with Meta's terms and guidelines. That means its completely safe to connect your Instagram account with SuperProfile.
Disconnecting an Instagram account from Auto DM
To disconnect an Instagram account, just go to the settings tab. Click on the three dots beside the account you want to disconnect and click “delete account”.
Setting Up an Automation
Step 1: Selecting a Trigger
Choose the type of engagement that should trigger the automation:
Comments on a Post/Reel → reply when someone comments.
Story Replies → reply to users who react to stories.
DMs → reply to DMs, with optional keyword filtering.
Insta Live Comments → reply to live stream comments.
Let's pick "Auto-reply to comments on Posts/Reels" for now.
Step 2: Adding Conditions
Conditions determine when the automation will run:
Specific Post / Any Post / Next Post → Choose which post the automation should work on.
Keywords → You can set up the automation to work only if the comment contains a specific keyword.
Step 3: Writing the Message
The automated response can include:
Primary Message → the main DM (up to 1000 characters).
Buttons → call-to-action buttons such as “Get it here” or “Buy now.”
Follow-up Messages → additional DMs after a time delay (e.g., 24 hours later).
💡 Adding a button increases click-through rates compared to plain text messages.
Step 4: Applying Optional Gates
Auto-DM can be gated to achieve additional outcomes:
Follow Gate → Require the user to follow before the DM is delivered. This is great for nudging your audience to follow up, helping grow your Instagram account.
Email Gate → Collect an email address before delivering the content. This can help you grow your email list.
Note: You will have to upgrade from the free plan to the Creator plan to use Follow Gate and Email Gate. They are not available on the free plan.
To set up Follow gate:
Turn on the "Ask for a follow before sending DM" toggle.
Type in the opening message that your audience should get.
If the person who clicks on the opening message button, doesn't follow you, they will receive a message nudging them to follow you. Type in this message now.
Two buttons are added to this message by default:
Visit profile: This takes them to your Instagram profile, so that they can follow you.
I'm following ✅: They will have to press this button after following for the automation to proceed to the next step.
Once they follow you and press the "I'm following ✅" button, they'll receive the primary message and follow up messages you defined earlier.
To set up the Email gate:
Turn on the "Collect email before sending DM" toggle.
Specify the "Opening message" that will ask your audience to share their email.
Next type in the "Retry message" to be sent in case they enter incorrect email.
Note: Both Follow and Email Collection gates cannot be enabled simultaneously. You can only choose one among follow check and email check.
Step 5: Adding Public Replies (Optional)
For post/reel automations, a public reply can be posted to the comment alongside the DM (e.g. "Check your DMs!"). This nudges people who comment to check their inbox and also encourages more comments.
To set up public replies:
Click the public replies checkbox to turn it on.
Specify up to 3 different versions of replies to be posted. It's recommended to have 3 different variants so that replies seem genuine.
Once you're done, click "Next".
Step 6: Preview and Launch
Before going live, a summary of the automation is displayed showing:
Trigger (e.g., comment with keyword “guide”)
DM that will be sent
Public comment reply (if enabled)
Follow-up message (if added)
Follow or Email checks (if added)
After confirming, click Confirm & Launch, and the automation is active. Go ahead and comment on your post with another account to test out the automation.
These steps cover DM automations for posts and reels. The process for story replies, DMs, and Instagram Lives is almost identical, with only small differences:
Stories → Can be triggered for a specific story or any story.
DMs → Can be triggered for all incoming messages or only when specific keywords are used.
Lives → Applies to all live sessions. Can run on all comments or only comments with specific keywords.
Understanding the Auto-DM Dashboard
The Auto-DM dashboard displays performance metrics for all automations.
On the top, you can see the combined numbers for performance of all your automations:
DMs Sent → number of automated DMs delivered.
Leads Generated → number of emails collected.
Followers Gained via Auto-DM → new followers gained through the “follow before DM” gate.
Towards the bottom, you can see the list of automations you have setup and their individual performance numbers:
New Followers → number of new followers gained through the automation
Runs → number of times the automation has been triggered.
Clicks → number of link/button clicks inside DMs.
💡 These numbers help test and optimize automations – for example, if clicks are low, try changing button text or offer.
